Missing Teeth

What are the different types of dentures?

There are two main types of dentures: partial dentures and complete dentures. A partial denture is used when only one or a few teeth are missing, while a complete denture is required when all teeth are lost and need to be replaced.

What is a partial denture?

A removable partial denture is a dental appliance designed to replace one or several missing teeth. It restores the function of the jaw and is made from replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored acrylic base, connected by a metal framework. The combination of acrylic and metal ensures strength and stability while maintaining a natural appearance.

What is a complete denture?

A complete or full denture is a removable appliance used when a person has lost all their teeth. It is a tissue-supported prosthesis, requiring a well-rounded ridge with sufficient height and width to ensure a proper fit.

What is the process of getting a new denture?

Typically, the denture process takes several weeks and involves 4-5 appointments. The process includes taking impressions of your gums, measuring your bite, and creating a wax try-in to check jaw relations. You’ll try on your denture before it’s finalized and acrylized. The final appointment delivers your new denture.

What problems should I expect after wearing a new denture?

Initially, dentures may feel larger in your mouth and may cause increased saliva production or altered speech. It’s best to avoid hot and hard foods during the initial adjustment period. Start by eating small pieces and wear your denture regularly to get accustomed to it. Some minor soreness is common, but it typically resolves within a few days.

Is it necessary to take out dentures at night?

Yes, it’s essential to remove your dentures at night and store them in water or denture soaking solution. This allows the supporting tissue to rest and repair. Additionally, removing the denture exposes your mouth to the beneficial antibacterial agents in your saliva.

What if a patient has bone loss and wants to wear dentures?

Bone loss in the ridge where dentures sit may affect stability, making dentures less secure. However, modifications can be made to improve the fit and provide an acceptable level of stability.

How long is a denture supposed to last?

A typical denture has a lifespan of 7-10 years. Factors such as cleaning habits, storage, bone loss, or the shifting of adjacent teeth can affect its longevity.

Should I use any toothpaste for cleaning the denture?

Avoid using regular toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it can be abrasive and cause scratches. These scratches may lead to plaque buildup. Instead, clean dentures with a soft-bristled brush and water after every meal.

Will the denture affect my speech or facial expressions?

In the early stages, you may experience difficulty pronouncing certain words, but this usually resolves as you become more comfortable with the denture. The adjustment period is typically short, and you will soon adapt to speaking and expressing yourself naturally.
