Why Do I Need a Crown?

Dental crowns are needed for several reasons. If a tooth has significant discoloration, requires protection after a filling, or needs support after a root canal treatment (RCT), a crown is the ideal solution. Crowns safeguard the tooth from fractures and enhance its strength and function.

How Long Does a Crown Last?

The lifespan of a dental crown depends on how well it is maintained. With proper oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and periodic scaling, crowns can last much longer. On average, crowns last between 5-7 years, but with excellent care, they can last over a decade.

Types of Dental Crowns Available

  • Metal Crowns: Made of non-noble metals, these crowns are extremely durable, resistant to corrosion, and require minimal tooth reduction. While they are strong and long-lasting, their metallic color makes them less appealing aesthetically.
  • PFM (Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal) Crowns: These crowns combine strength and aesthetics. They have a metal structure with a porcelain layer on top, offering durability and a natural appearance. However, for front teeth, gum recession may expose the metal lining, and more tooth reduction is required compared to all-ceramic crowns.
  • All-Ceramic Crowns: These crowns are made entirely of porcelain, offering a life-like, natural appearance. They are highly esthetic and blend seamlessly with natural teeth. Their high-pressure strength makes them an excellent choice for most patients.

Will Eating Be Difficult After Getting a Crown?

Not at all! Eating will actually become easier with a crown, as it enhances chewing ability. While there may be slight discomfort initially, sticking to soft foods and small bites for the first few days will help you adjust quickly.

Will a Crown Affect My Speech?

No, a crown won’t affect your ability to speak. However, it may take a short time to get used to the new fit.

What Is the Process of Placing a Crown?

The process typically requires two appointments:

  1. First Appointment: The tooth is prepared for the crown by reducing its size, and an impression is taken for the custom crown. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth.
  2. Second Appointment: The temporary crown is replaced with the permanent one. The dentist checks the fit and makes any necessary adjustments. Each appointment lasts about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

When Can I Eat After Getting a Crown?

After the permanent crown is placed, avoid sticky or hard foods for 24 hours on the treated side. For the first hour, refrain from eating or drinking anything. After this period, you can resume normal eating and drinking.

Can a Permanent Crown Be Removed or Adjusted?

Yes, a permanent crown can be removed or adjusted if necessary. However, removing it may damage the crown, so this step should be taken only if absolutely required.

How Much Does a Dental Crown Cost?

The cost of a dental crown varies based on the material used, ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹50,000.
